Painting on Masking Tape and on Suede

9/19/2013

Today, while we were working on cardboard structures, I realized how much I like masking tape.

I was not the only one.

After the young artists secured their structures, they were so happy with the patterns they created using masking tape, that they did not want to cover them with anything.  They worked with such precision that their pieces do not look incomplete, but I was still concerned about durability.  I know it will eventually peel off or maybe even disintegrate.  I have made sculptures out of tape before, but I have to explore the humidity effect from this area where I live now.  I built a container out of cardboard scraps and tested it out on this rainy day.  I know that there are new primers available that adhere to any surface and create a better bond between tape cracks and creases.  The primer will act as a sealant and a sealer.  In other words, a coat of primer laminates the tape designs.  The picture above shows the tape and one coat of primer.  The pictures below show the cardboard container and also the Minecraft cubes that my son is working on.  He uses primer on everything, even suede cubes, which now feel like vinyl and have a smooth surface to paint on.  All these projects have been able to stand the test of time.
